The four subspecies have similar shapes. The appearance between the Eastern Painted, Midland Painted, & Southern
Painted turtles are closely identical, except for a few notes; while the Western Painted has a more distinct
coloration.
Eastern Painted has
Midland Painted usually a plain color (dark green to drab) carapace with strong red-color on the
margin/brigde area of the turtle.
Southern Painted has a line that runs down the middle of the carapce shell, from the nuchal ( forward
most position) to the , straight down the middle/vertebrate.
The Western Painted is the only one of the four that has a color appearance and pattern that differs from the Organiztions turtles species
